The Tabernacle
What is the Tabernacle?
Strongly centered on Christian fellowship, our housing projects entail the setting up of a tightly knit communities based in urban center’s throughout Canada. Residents will be asked to pay a nominal rent to reside there. They can seek to stay there long-term, if not indefinitely. Our only request would be that, in exchange, they embrace the community’s values and Christian beliefs.
Who are the Residents?
It is envisioned that residents will be those who are seeking community-centered living and wish to follow Christ as well as those struggling to compete in the regular housing market, such as seniors, single parents, welfare recipients, and those with various disabilities.
Who is Eligible?
The minimum eligibility criteria for inclusion into the community are:
being designated as a member of a vulnerable group;
drug-free or in remission from substance use disorders;
no sexual offences;
having no recent or outstanding criminal offences (policy to be determined); and
paying the nominal rent.
Besides the minimum eligibility criteria, houses will be allocated according to availability, need, and compatibility with the community. The community reserves the right to choose its members. Within the laws of the region, it may evict individuals involved in illegal activities, engaging in disruptive behavior, or threatening the safety or well-being of other residents.
What is the Cost?
Rent is determined according to a means test set less than 30 percent of gross monthly income. Sometimes rent can be offset by on-site work such as maintenance, cleaning, gardening, snow removal, running church services, etc.
